Race Recap

Overview

Snail-28-Bosan-poster

Event Date

March 23, 2024

Venue

With Locals Nepal
Located at Shim, Panga (near Taudaha Lake), Kathmandu
Open pin on Google Map

Distances

10K, 6K and 3K

Observations, updates and note to self

  • No phone signal or internet at the venue. This meant communication with the trail team, except some communication on radio, was next to zero. There was no way to tell if everybody from the trail team was ready at their spot
  • Pickup got stuck on mud and cost 20mins in the morning during marshal drop off (hence some marshals were missing on crucial spots for first runners). Instruct trail team to move on foot should there be any unforeseen delays
  • Seems like a few people took the default Google Map directions (via Kirtipur, through tons of potholes and road under construction), instead of the one suggested on the website (via Taudaha, marginally longer but almost fully paved). Make the suggested direction more prominent than the Google Pin on website.
  • Reiterate that Snail Trail is a recreational event, and that there is absolutely zero tolerance for any disgruntled and grumpy participants that swear, shriek and exhibit unnecessary, rowdy behavior in front of kids (or anyone for that matter). Esp in a Nepali society, cussing in front of families is super disrespectful and culturally verboten
  • Photography is not an opt-out and as signed on the waiver, participants will have their pictures taken on multiple spots
  • A total of six or seven people from the trail team will know the full route, the others will not. Instruct team members that have not done the entire trail to not try to guess or help out with directions. Photographers are to exclusively take photos and not show trail directions etc. Have team ask runners to check the map on their phones, that they downloaded and loaded onto their favorite trail app (mine's Google Earth)
  • Emphasize on the website that runners are required to download the map on their phones, which they are to follow should they get lost
  • Because of internet issues, it took several attempts to export data from online database to the timekeeping system. Figure out a workround should this situation arise again
  • Raincheck for beginners and hikers. Payment deferred for next event if it rains, for those who cannot show up, and only if raincheck is announced in the morning (which will be the case only if there's heavy or constant rain)
  • Fastest race wrap up till date. We were done by 10:30am, despite starting late
  • Bib quality was low. Consider shifting deadline to 3pm or 4pm, so there's plenty of time for high quality prints.
  • Keep food and water CP only at 3-4km mark for 12K and 6K distances
  • Changed the trail on last minute because of rain. Identify sketchy bits of the trail beforehand and figure out a way to cut it off as needed
  • Have a base coordinator to communicate directly with the trail coordinator
  • Event date coincided with final exams. Most 3K kids were unable to join. 3K omitted

    WHAT IS SNAIL TRAIL SERIES?
Snail Trail is a fun outdoors event for you and your loved ones, open for folks with all kinds of trail experience (you do need to be fit for the distance you choose). With plenty of time to finish at a comfortable pace, you could either run the whole thing or do a leisurely brisk hike. Snail Trail is a running race for sure - there are winners - but it's purely a fun, social day out on the trails. As with any outdoor activity, there is an element of physical risk at Snail Trail, so please take it slow and easy on this small and fun event.
    ·
    UPDATES
    - No phone signal or internet at the venue. This meant communication with the trail team, except some communication on radio, was next to zero. There was no way to tell if everybody from the trail team was ready at their spot

    4. Code of Conduct
From our experience of organizing over 30 of these events, we know the importance of having everyone follow rules and that no individual is allowed to ruin the experience or worse compromise the safety of other participants. Here are the most important ones:
    - If you miss the deadline, you will be subject to Rs. 500 late fees (surcharge on the entry fees). The bib will be handwritten (and my handwriting is a little too tough to the eyes). We cannot make exceptions to this rule, as this is the single deciding factor if the race starts on time.
    - For no-shows or late shows, the payment is non-transferable across races and between participants, as all costs will have been incurred.
    - Photography and your result is not opt-outs and will be published online. Event photos will be published on Social Media. Your result will be published along with your nationality and age category. All other other data you provide to us will be kept confidential, unless government authorities ask for the same verbally or in written form.
    - Absolutely no form of swearing or yelling (we had this misfortune before). There will be kids around, and we want to make sure nobody is exposed to nasty behavior. If you are not content with the race, you can express your concerns in a civil manner, but no form of swearing, shrieking or rowdy behavior will be tolerated at the slightest.
    - Make sure your physician clears you for outdoor activities. Snail Trail welcomes and encourages people with all kinds of fitness level, but you need to be in physical shape to finish the race in within the cut-off times (see Schedule section on the website).
    - The trail can be steep, flat, undulating, wide, narrow, slippery, rocky, thorny, sandy, muddy, uneven and can also be on the roads on some parts with some traffic. Please be alert at all times, and follow colored ribbons and spray that match the color of your bib.
    - The best way to enjoy the Series is to register/pay on time, show up on time (avoid late fees) and follow the trail markings from start to finish. If you take a wrong turn, check the GPS track that you'd load on your phone before starting the race. Any pace is fine.
    - All kids 12 years or below must be accompanied by a guardian. If is the guardians responsibility to make sure the kids are safe on the trails and not push them too hard for a medal. The kids must have proper running/hiking gear, including protection from the sun and rain.
    - And finally, there will be music playing. Please do not change the music or volume. We had someone play sleazy songs before.
    - Snail Trail is a small, recreational trail race/hike that's widely loved, so let's keep it slow, easy and fun on the trails.

See you all tomorrow on time at With Locals Nepal.

    Snail Calendar

Following are confirmed dates. We will add more dates as and when they are confirmed.

    [xcalendar_races]

    What’s up with only Lubhu?
We are changing our model. Instead of aiming for a different location/venue each time – which severely compromises quality across races (permission, space, toilets etc) – we have now tied up with Bishudole Farmhouse in Lubhu. We will add more dates (in addition to Lubhu on said dates) as other locations and venues get identified and confirmed, like Thali, Taudaha etc, which means more than one Snail Trail a month!
